One of China's oldest universities and its most beautiful campus, tracing its roots to an institute founded in 1893 and named National Wuhan University in 1928; its campus covers green Luojia Hill on the south shore of East Lake. It is famous for its historic buildings of the 1930s, blending Chinese architecture, with upturned roofs of green glazed tiles, with Western construction, the best known being the old library on the hilltop and the long student dormitories stepping down the slope. In late March the campus becomes China's most famous cherry blossom spot, as white and pink trees bloom along Cherry Blossom Avenue beneath the old dormitories, drawing tens of thousands of visitors a day from across the country. Entry is free with an advance booking through the university's website; for the 2026 cherry season bookings ran from 10 March to 3 April, capped at 20,000 visitors a day on weekdays and 40,000 at weekends, per visitor guides. The university sometimes closes the campus to visitors during exams and events.
