A lake and resort in Xiaoshan, south of the Qiantang River, that began as a reservoir built in 1112 by the county magistrate Yang Shi to water the fields, named for scenery said to recall the lovely rivers of Xiang; over the centuries it silted up and was nibbled away, and it has been revived in stages since 2006. Arched bridges, wooden walkways and pavilions cross the water among wooded hills, and near the lake is the Kuahuqiao site, where the oldest known dugout canoe in the world was found. Walking around the lake is free at any time, and boat trips cost about CNY 60, per visitor guides. Xianghu station on Metro Line 1 is nearby, and it is quieter than West Lake, especially on weekdays.
