At the mouth of Xiling Gorge, the easternmost and largest of the Yangtze's Three Gorges, ends the 311-km run of gorges from Baidicheng in Chongqing to Nanjin Pass at Yichang; before the dams Xiling was the most dangerous of the three to navigate, and it is made up of four smaller gorges between towering cliffs. The scenic area at the gorge mouth looks over the river from the cliffs, and its best-known sight is Sanyou Cave, the «Cave of the Three Travellers», a national monument named after the poets Bai Juyi, his brother Bai Xingjian and Yuan Zhen, who visited in 819 and wrote poems on its walls; other poets followed over the centuries, and its walls are covered in inscriptions. Tickets cost about CNY 60 to 65, half price for students, and the area is open from 8.30 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides. The gorge can also be seen on boat trips from Yichang.
