An old river town on the Li River, about 25 km north of Yangshuo town, ringed by some of the area's finest karst peaks and close to the famous scene printed on the back of China's 20-yuan note. The town keeps an old street of stone and timber houses with tiled roofs and a small river harbour, and next to it is Fishing Village, chosen in 2012 for the first list of China's traditional villages. Small rafts leave the town on short Li River trips to the 20-yuan view, hikers climb Laozhai Hill above the river's bends, and the town is also home to Yangshuo railway station on the Guiyang–Guangzhou high-speed line. The town is free to enter, and river trips are ticketed by distance. Early morning and late afternoon are best, when the crowds thin, and you can pair it with nearby Xianggong Hill for the sunrise.
