Xitou Nature Education Area, also known as Xitou Bamboo Forest, is a forest park in Lugu Township, Nantou County, central Taiwan, about 18 km north of the Alishan area in a straight line. The name Xitou means the source of a river. Under Japanese rule the forest was an experimental forest for University of Tokyo students; after 1945 it was declared a nature reserve and took its present name in 1970. It lies in a valley enclosed by mountains on three sides, at an average altitude of 1,150 metres, covering 2,500 hectares, with its highest point, Mount Lingtou, at 2,025 metres. Dense stands of tall bamboo and towering cedars fill the park, along with a ginkgo garden, and more than 70 bird species live here. Paved paths, wooden bridges and a small lake wind through the forest, and mist wraps the trees on most mornings. Visitors walk the shaded paths among bamboo and cedar and enjoy the cool air, with an average temperature of about 16 °C. It rains often, with more than 2,600 mm a year, so bring an umbrella and a light jacket.
