A late-Qing coastal fort looking out to sea west of Haikou, completed in 1891 after the Sino-French War on the orders of Zhang Zhidong, Viceroy of Guangdong and Guangxi, to defend the island against attack from the sea; together with the forts of Humen, Wusong and Dagu it is counted among China's four best-known old coastal forts. Its five gun platforms stand in a straight line more than 200 metres long, facing the sea and ringed by thick walls, and each carried a fortress gun made by the German firm Krupp, three of them of 240 mm calibre. Passages, tunnels and underground magazines link the platforms; the fort became a protected national monument in 2006, and a small park now surrounds it, overlooking the city's western harbour. Tickets cost CNY 10 from October to April and CNY 8 from May to September, and it opens from 8:00 to 18:00 with last entry at 17:30, per visitor guides.
