A large national wetland park in west Hangzhou, covering about 1,150 hectares and crossed by six main watercourses scattered with ponds, lakes and marshes; it's one of China's earliest national wetland parks. The area's history goes back more than 4,000 years; it keeps the life of traditional water villages, with silkworm rearing and silk making, hosts dragon-boat races, and is the birthplace of the «Southern Opera» of Chinese theatre. Visitors move by electric or traditional boats between small islands, willow groves and reed beds, or on wooden walkways, with plenty of water birds; it's a calm retreat from the crowds of West Lake. Tickets are about CNY 80 per adult, and an electric boat about CNY 100 an hour, per visitor guides. Allow half a day; spring and autumn are the best seasons.
