A coastal mountain range in south-eastern Zhejiang whose name means «Wild Goose Pond Mountains»; at its heart lies Mount Yandang, an ancient volcanic caldera of about 13 square kilometres formed in four eruptions between 100 and 120 million years ago, whose igneous rocks time has carved into sheer cliffs and pillar-like pinnacles, with forests and bamboo groves on the slopes and streams and waterfalls running through them. The area became a national geopark in 2004 and a Global Geopark in 2005, covering 450 square kilometres, and was rated 5A in 2007. Its best-known spots are Lingfeng, the «spiritual peaks», with its night tour when the peaks turn into shapes visitors imagine in the dark; Lingyan with its towering cliffs; and the Great Dragon Pond waterfall, which drops from the top of a cliff like a thread of water. Each of the main spots costs about CNY 45, the Lingfeng night tour 50 and a combined ticket about 150, open from 8 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides. Allow two days if you can.
And their night tour.
From the clifftop.
Towering rock.
Yandang town, Yueqing, north-east of Wenzhou, Zhejiang
Spring and autumn are best for walking, the waterfalls run strongest after the spring and summer rains, and an overnight stay lets you join the Lingfeng night tour.
Choices are few in Yandang town and local cooking is seafood-heavy but also uses pork, so bring snacks and look in Wenzhou for restaurants under the halal sign.
