The city's main museum, founded in 1958 and ranked among China's first-class museums; its first home was the historic Fujian Guildhall built by merchants from southern China, before most of it moved to a modern building of 17,000 square metres at the western end of the cultural square in the city centre. Its galleries tell the history of the Jiaodong peninsula from prehistoric times, with bronzes from the ancient states that rose in the region, among them cooking vessels, bells and lamps, followed by ceramics and jade from later ages, including blue-and-white porcelain. Sections are given to the story of modern Yantai after its port opened to trade and to the industries it became known for, such as clockmaking, and the main hall greets visitors with large carved reliefs telling the history of the region. Entry is free on showing a passport; it opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 between May and October and until 16:30 for the rest of the year, and closes on Mondays, per visitor guides.
