An old mountain town once called «kiln village», founded at the end of the Western Han dynasty and the area's porcelain-making centre before the Ming; it is also known for tea, so locals call it «the source of porcelain, the home of tea and a sea of forest», and it is listed among China's famous historic and cultural towns. The town lines both banks of a clear stream crossed by stone bridges, with old white-walled, dark-roofed houses along the water and forested hills and tea gardens all around. Nearby is the village of Gaoling, which gave the white clay used for porcelain its worldwide name, «kaolin», as the area around it became Jingdezhen's main source of clay under the Qing. The Gaoling-Yaoli scenic-area ticket costs CNY 110 and covers the town and other sites, and the area is open from 8 am to 5.30 pm, per visitor guides.
