Yapeyú is a small village on the Uruguay river in eastern Corrientes province, facing Brazil, with a special place in Argentine history: General José de San Martín, hero of the independence of Argentina, Chile and Peru, was born here in 1778. Before that it was a Jesuit Guaraní «reduction», founded in 1627 and known for its vast cattle ranches; it was destroyed in a war in 1817, and the present village rose on its ruins in 1860. Its best-known sight is the «Templo Sanmartiniano», a memorial building protecting the remains of the walls of the governors' house where San Martín was born, with a museum on his life, along with the ruins of the old reduction and a quiet square by the river. The village is far from the big cities, on National Route 14, and wandering is free. It pairs with a trip to the Misiones missions.
