One of the «Four Great Academies» in Chinese history, founded in 976 under the Song at the east foot of Yuelu Mountain; for more than a thousand years it was a centre of learning and Confucian philosophy where leading scholars taught and debated. In 1903 it became an institute of higher learning, and through several stages it turned into Hunan University in 1926, making it one of the few educational institutions in the world where teaching has continued on the same site for more than a thousand years; it still stands within the university campus today. Gateways, halls and courtyards follow one another in an elegant traditional style of white walls and grey roofs, with the great lecture hall and its inscribed boards, an old library and small gardens of pools and bamboo, and a museum of Chinese academies next door. Tickets are about CNY 40, booked and bought in advance through the academy's official account, per visitor guides. A visit usually pairs with Yuelu Mountain and the nearby Aiwan Pavilion.
