A quiet hot-spring town in a mountain basin about 400 metres up, at the foot of Mount Yufu, a 1,583-metre twin-peaked volcano nicknamed «Bungo Fuji» that looks down on the town from almost everywhere. Yufuin is known for its traditional inns and open-air baths, some with views of Mount Yufu, and for a calmer, more rural feel than nearby Beppu. From the station, Yunotsubo street runs toward Lake Kinrin, lined with craft shops, sweet shops, cafés and small museums. The town has Tenso Shrine by Lake Kinrin, rice fields around its edges and the small Floral Village with its European-style houses. The maples turn in autumn, and on cold mornings mist fills the basin. Walking around is free. The Yufuin no Mori limited express comes from Hakata in Fukuoka in about two and a quarter hours, or buses take about an hour from Beppu. Many public baths are separate for men and women and bathed in without clothing; some inns rent private baths.
