Žabljak is a small town in northern Montenegro, the seat of Žabljak Municipality, about 81 km north of Podgorica in a straight line. It has about 1,700 people and lies at the heart of the Durmitor mountain region. At 1,456 metres it is the highest town in the Balkans. Its first name was Varezina voda, after a strong spring nearby, then Hanovi, because caravans rested here; its present name dates from 1870. By the 1880s it had become a market town. The town's steep-roofed houses are scattered among green meadows and pine forest, with Durmitor's grey rocky peaks rising around and the Black Lake a short walk away. In winter snow covers the town and mountains, and it becomes a ski destination. The town is a base for Durmitor National Park: visitors walk from it to the Black Lake, climb the peaks and visit the Tara river canyon. Mountain weather is changeable; summer is for hiking and winter for skiing.
