Maksimir for a long walk, animals and nature close to the centre by tram. Bundek south of the river for the lake, summer swimming and open space. The Green Horseshoe in the centre for short moves between gardens and museums with no transport. And for the mountain, Sljeme north of the city by car or bus — real forest and walking trails at a thousand metres.

Zagreb Zoo sits inside Maksimir, and that is the key to it: Maksimir is the oldest public park in south-eastern Europe, opened to the public in 1794, a wide green space with lakes, mature trees, walks and small romantic buildings. The zoo itself was founded in 1925, beginning with three owls and three foxes in a small corner, then expanding gradually. Today it holds hundreds of species, and large parts of it have been rebuilt over the last two decades to improve conditions, with an emphasis on breeding programmes for threatened European species. The practical arithmetic for a visitor: the zoo and the park together make a comfortable half day. Even without entering the zoo, Maksimir is worth the trip — people from Zagreb come here to walk, run and spend Sunday, and it is the easiest way to see the city as its residents live it rather than as a tourist sees it.
