Zelenci is a nature reserve near the town of Kranjska Gora in the far northwest of Slovenia, about 4 km west of Kranjska Gora in a straight line. It is the source of the Sava Dolinka, a tributary of the Danube. At Zelenci, water from the underground Nadiža stream, which starts in the Planica valley, re-emerges through the porous bottom of a lake 2 metres deep, whose water is known for its deep, brilliant green, the source of its name from the Slovene word for green. The site is thought to be a remnant of a much larger glacial lake formed after the Planica glacier retreated. The clear water glows green and turquoise over a bottom where small circles show the springs bubbling up through the sand, with fish swimming through it. Wet meadow, reeds and forest surround it, Alpine peaks rise behind, and the grasses turn orange in autumn. Visitors walk a short wooden boardwalk from the road to a viewing platform over the water and can continue on the path around the reserve. The boardwalk suits all ages, the reserve is quiet in the morning, and as a nature reserve it is best to stay on the boardwalk.
