The tomb of Hong Taiji, the ruler who proclaimed the Qing dynasty and its first emperor, and of his Empress Xiaoduanwen, built between 1643 and 1651 in the north of Shenyang, which is why locals call it Beiling, the «North Tomb»; it is the largest of the three Qing imperial tombs north of the Great Wall, and UNESCO inscribed it in 2004 as part of the Imperial Tombs of the Ming and Qing Dynasties. The tomb stands at the northern end of Beiling Park, 330 hectares of pine woods and lakes that were off limits to commoners until the park opened in 1928. Visitors walk the spirit way lined with stone animals, cross a bridge over a lake to the tomb's gates and red buildings, and reach the tower and the mound under which the emperor rests. Park entry costs CNY 6 and the tomb CNY 50 from April to October and CNY 30 for the rest of the year; the tomb is open from 8 am to 5 pm, per visitor guides.
