A film town built around the ruins of two frontier forts, one from the Ming and one from the Qing dynasty, at the foot of the Helan Mountains north-west of Yinchuan; founded by the writer Zhang Xianliang, it has served as the set for well-known Chinese films such as Red Sorghum, A Chinese Odyssey, New Dragon Gate Inn and Ashes of Time, and it was the first site in Yinchuan to be rated 5A, China's top grade for tourist attractions. Visitors wander among the forts' earthen walls and the preserved sets of mud houses, markets and lanes in old-time style, while «Old Yinchuan Street» recreates the city of the past with its crafts and street food.
