An old town on the Wuyang River in eastern Guizhou that was a fortress and key stop on the road from the central plains to the Yunnan-Guizhou plateau; it has been a national historic and cultural city since 1986. The river winds through the middle of town in an S, with the old prefectural city on the north bank and the garrison city on the south, so that from above it looks like the Chinese taiji symbol, and parts of their Ming-era walls and gates still stand. Old timber houses and stone landings for boats line both banks, the stone Qinglong Bridge with its pavilion links them, and east of town the Qinglong Dong complex of Ming and Qing buildings clings to the cliff above the water. In the evening the banks are lit and pleasure boats drift along the river. Walking the old town is free; the Qinglong Dong complex costs about CNY 60, 40 off season, and an evening boat trip about 80, per visitor guides.

Wuyang town, Zhenyuan County, about 100 km by road north-east of Kaili, Guizhou
By train or bus from Kaili; many stay a night in the old town to see the riverbanks lit up in the evening.
Choices are few in Zhenyuan and local cooking uses a lot of pork, so bring food or order fish and vegetables and ask about ingredients.
