A building shaped like two giant seashells on Yeli Island off Zhuhai's coast, the only grand theatre in China built on an island; it opened on 31 December 2016, is known as the «Sun and Moon Shells» and has a built area of 59,000 square metres. The larger «Sun Shell» rises 90 metres and holds a hall for 1,550 people, while the smaller «Moon Shell» holds a multi-purpose theatre for 550; both shells glitter with lights above the water at night and are among the best-known images of the modern city. Yeli Island itself is the closest of Zhuhai's islands to the mainland, only about 400 metres away and linked to the city by bridges; covering some 0.42 square kilometres, it is ringed by a 3.5-kilometre seaside path, and a hill trail climbs through the trees to a summit looking over the bay, the islands of the South China Sea and the pearl farms. Viewing the theatre from outside and walking the island are free, while the halls open only to ticket holders for performances, per visitor guides. The evening, when the shells are lit, is the loveliest time.
