An island of about 62 square kilometres in the Zhoushan archipelago, part of Putuo District, linked to Zhoushan's main island by a bridge opened in 1999; Zhoushan's airport stands on it, and it lies just 2.5 km from Putuoshan island, as part of the Putuoshan scenic area. Its best-known feature is the «Five Sands», five linked beaches stretching about five kilometres, Nansha, Dongsha, Qiansha, Lisha and Qingsha, nicknamed «ten li of golden sand»; an international sand sculpture festival is held on Nansha, and there are also the black-pebble beach of Wushitang and the Daqingshan hills above the sea. The island itself is free, while beaches and sights are ticketed, among them Nansha at CNY 70, Wushitang at 40 and Daqingshan at 100 from April to mid-November and 60 otherwise, with cheaper combined tickets, per visitor guides.
