Pomerode Zoo began by accident: in 1924 a leak from the water tank of Hermann Weege's factories formed a large pond behind his house, where he started keeping domestic and wild animals, and in 1932 he founded the zoo formally, the first private zoo in Brazil. The Hermann Weege Foundation has run it since 1977. Today it is the largest zoo in Santa Catarina, on about 46,000 square metres, with around a thousand animals of more than two hundred species, among them lions, tigers, chimpanzees and a hippopotamus. It opens daily 8:00-18:00. Tickets are R$62, or R$31 for children aged 4 to 14, students and over-60s, and free up to age 3. Allow at least half a day.
