Brasília's zoo is older than the capital itself: it opened on 6 December 1957 as the «Zoobotanical Park», before Brasília was inaugurated on 21 April 1960. It draws more than a million visitors a year, making it one of the Federal District's most visited sights, and it is counted among the district's cultural assets. It lies at the end of the Via L4 Sul in the city's southern wing, across about 140 hectares, and besides the animal enclosures it has a natural science museum, a butterfly house, artificial lakes and picnic areas. Its foundation also runs a wildlife sanctuary near the airport. The zoo recorded the first use of stem cells to treat a wild animal, a female maned wolf hit by a car. Tickets are R$10 and R$5 reduced, falling to R$5 for everyone on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays except holidays, and children up to five go free. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-17:00, with last entry at 16:00, and closes on Mondays for maintenance.
