Curitiba Zoo lies inside the Iguaçu Regional Park, Brazil's largest urban park at about eight million square metres, created in 1976 for flood control and as a green lung for the city, crossed by the Iguaçu River with its floodplains and riverside woods. The zoo opened on 28 March 1982, when the large animals were moved from the cramped Passeio Público in the city centre to this spacious site. Today it holds mammals, birds and reptiles from Brazil and other continents in roomy enclosures among the trees, and runs breeding and environmental education programmes. In its early years a boat service ran along a canal linking old quarry lakes. Entry is free on a first-come basis, with a cap on visitors at any one time; it opens Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-16:00 and closes on Mondays for maintenance. It is in the south of the city, far from the centre, so go by car or taxi, and come in the morning when the animals are most active.
