Zooparque Itatiba is a large zoo on the Dom Pedro I highway at Itatiba, about thirty kilometres from Atibaia and eighty from São Paulo, holding some 1,400 animals of Brazilian and international species according to travel guides, in wide grounds among trees and lakes. Animals are shown in open, naturalistic enclosures, and the park runs daily family activities, including feeding times and short talks posted on the day's programme board, a children's play area and, in some seasons, chats with the keepers. A Discovery Kids children's series has been filmed there. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 9:00 to 17:00 according to recent reports, with tickets sold in advance on its website at varying prices. Allow at least half a day, and arrive early on hot days, when the animals are most active.
