The ruins of a hilltop castle in the Savinja valley, the original seat of the family that later became the Counts of Celje, the most powerful dynasty in the history of the Slovene lands. The sequence is what makes the site interesting: the Lords of Žovnek began here as minor local nobility in the twelfth century, and from here they rose until they moved to the larger castle at Celje and took its name and title. Visiting both shows the whole trajectory — from a small stronghold in a valley to the largest castle in the country. What survives are ruins: towers, walls and vaults, partly consolidated and partly decayed. Structural stabilisation work has been going on for years, so some parts may be closed. The site is far less visited than Celje, and you will often have it almost to yourself. That makes the experience different: quiet ruins in open countryside rather than a restored castle with tickets and queues. Practical points: reached by car then a short uphill walk. Entry is normally free or a token fee, and there may be seasonal hours or events. The ruins are not fully secured — mind the floors and edges with children.

Yes, and that is the better order: both are in eastern Slovenia about thirty kilometres apart. Start at Žovnek to see where the family began, then move to Celje to see where they arrived. The story reads entirely differently in that sequence.
Variable. Stabilisation work has run for years, with some parts consolidated and enterable and others fenced or unsafe. Do not expect a furnished castle with displays — these are ruins in open countryside, and their value is the site, the quiet and the valley view rather than exhibited content.
