Krk

Krk is the largest Adriatic island and the only one **joined by a bridge** to the mainland — which changes everything: no ferry, no timetable, and no wind to cancel your crossing. The bridge has been open since 1980, and **Rijeka airport** is on the island itself. That makes Krk by far the easiest Croatian island to reach, and the most practical for a family or anyone who does not want transport complications. Its history goes much further back: it was the seat of the **Frankopans**, the most powerful Croatian noble family, who ruled for centuries from their castle in Krk town. In a small church at **Jurandvor** near Baška was found the **Baška tablet** — a Glagolitic text of around 1100 regarded as **the oldest substantial document in Croatian** and a founding document of the language. The island is varied: stone towns, pebble beaches, the **Žlahtina** vineyards at Vrbnik, and a bare bora-scoured coast in the south-east.
