The first town you reach after crossing the bridge, standing on a **raised plateau** above a bay and looking across to the mainland. It was the Roman settlement of **Fulfinum**, whose remains are still at **Mirine** below the town on the shore: the foundations of a fifth-century early Christian basilica with a floor mosaic. The medieval core is small and ordered around a square, holding the thirteenth-century Romanesque **Church of the Assumption**, a tower, and remains of walls. Omišalj was an important centre of **Glagolitic** writing, where manuscripts were copied — among them the known **Omišalj manuscript**. Note: it has another aspect the guidebooks omit. On the far side of the bay stand an **oil refinery and power station**, the largest industrial installation on any Croatian island. They are not visible from the town square but are from some angles — and they are part of the island''s reality, which this guide does not hide. Note: **Rijeka airport** is minutes away, on the island itself.

Omišalj — about 20 km north of Krk town
As easily as any island allows: **by car over the Krk bridge** straight off the coast road near Rijeka — no ferry, no booking, no timetable, and no wind to cancel your crossing. The bridge has been open since 1980 and **toll-free since 2020**. Rijeka to Krk town is about **60 km**, an hour. ⚠ More important practically: **Rijeka airport is on the island itself**, near Omišalj, so you can land and be at your hotel in twenty minutes without crossing water. ⚠ Regular buses run from Rijeka and Zagreb to Krk town and Baška. ⚠ That makes Krk the **first choice** for anyone wanting a Croatian island without transport complications — particularly with children or on a short trip.
