Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Empire from 1185 to 1393, standing on three hills around which the river Yantra loops in tight bends. From the hill of **Tsarevets** the tsars and patriarchs of Bulgaria ruled for two centuries, and at its height the city was called the third Rome. Today it is a small university town of timber houses hung on the slopes, a street of craftsmen and the ruins of two fortresses — among the finest places in Bulgaria and far less crowded than Sofia.
