The largest museum in Oran and western Algeria, named after the martyr Ahmed Zabana, one of the first martyrs of the war of independence, with wide-ranging collections of archaeology, natural history, fine arts and ethnography under one roof. The archaeology halls hold prehistoric finds and Roman remains from sites in western Algeria, including colourful mosaics, statues and ancient coins, alongside objects from the Islamic periods. The natural history halls have mounted animals, rocks and fossils from Algeria, the art halls paintings by Algerian and foreign artists, and the ethnography halls the traditional dress, jewellery and tools of western Algeria. Tickets are a token fee, and the museum usually closes one day a week, so check hours before visiting. It is a good choice for families and for very hot days.
