Oran's best-known promenade, a broad boulevard on the cliff edge above the port running along the seafront of the city centre, with palms, benches and cafés, the meeting place of Oran's people and visitors on summer evenings. The promenade gives a wide view of the port, the ships and the sea, and of Mount Murdjajo and Santa Cruz Fort to the west, with elegant early-twentieth-century buildings with iron balconies lining it behind, so it feels like the city's balcony on the Mediterranean. In the evening the seafront fills with families, young people and sellers of ice cream and roasted peanuts, lights come on over the harbour, and in summer celebrations and festivals are held around it, best known the raï music festival. Strolling is free at any time, and after sunset is loveliest. It pairs with nearby Place du 1er Novembre and the old Sidi El Houari quarter on a walk.
