Akrotiri is the city the volcano buried and thereby immortalised: a prosperous Minoan port entombed by the colossal Thera eruption (~1600 BC) โ the most violent in recorded human history โ beneath ash that kept everything: three-storey houses with their stairs, streets with their drains, oil jars in their stores, wooden beds printed in the void. Seventeen centuries older than Pompeii and kinder in story: no skeletons here โ its people read the mountain's omens and left before the wrath, leaving a complete city without dead, its details ash-restored. A modern climate roof covers the whole dig, so you walk its true streets on hanging walkways. Its painted masterpieces (blue monkeys, the fishermen, saffron gatherers) live in Fira's museum and Athens' National Archaeological โ pair site and Fira museum in one day and the meaning completes. And the legend stands open: many count it Plato's first Atlantis candidate.
