Al Noor Island is a landscaped island in Khalid Lagoon in the city of Sharjah, about 4 km from central Sharjah and 18 km from Dubai in a straight line. A footbridge leads to it from behind Al Noor Mosque on the Sharjah Corniche. The island was developed by the Sharjah Investment and Development Authority, Shurooq, and opened by the Ruler of Sharjah, Sheikh Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, in December 2015. It covers about 45,000 square metres, with some 70,000 trees and plants and nine outdoor artworks, including «OVO» and «Torus». More than a million people have visited since it opened. At its centre is the Butterfly House, a climate-controlled glass pavilion wrapped in a golden, intricately cut screen, home to more than 20 butterfly species. Paths wind between gardens, trees and small bridges, looking out over the lagoon and the city towers. Visitors walk the gardens, look into the Butterfly House and the Literature Pavilion, and stop at the café. Entry is paid, the visit suits families and children, and the island is prettily lit in the evening.
