A leisure and culture district on a canal in Sharjah, south of the city centre near Al Majaz and bounded by Al Khan Corniche Street. At its heart is a canal lined with pedestrian walkways, arcaded buildings in an Arabian style and the city's modern towers behind. Along the water are restaurants and cafés with outdoor seating, fountains, small boats, children's areas and the Maraya Art Centre, which hosts contemporary art exhibitions. The Al Qasba Mosque, with its dome and two minarets, overlooks the canal and is lit at night. The well-known «Eye of the Emirates» wheel stood here for many years before moving to Al Montazah Parks in Sharjah, so today Al Qasba is more of a calm waterside promenade. Wandering is free, and evenings are best, when the heat eases and the canal is lit. It suits families and pairs easily with the nearby Al Majaz waterfront.
