One of Port Said's landmark mosques, facing the city beach that gives it its name, «the shore», and visible to ships arriving to transit the Suez Canal. It is crowned by a large blue dome patterned with golden zigzags and a slender minaret. The Egyptian Armed Forces built it to a design by the army's engineering corps, opening it in 1978 during the armed forces' celebrations. A businessman later rebuilt and enlarged it, and it reopened in its present form on 26 December 2003 during Port Said's Victory Day celebrations. Port Said marks Victory Day every 23 December, the anniversary of the departure of British and French forces in 1956. Set on the seafront, the mosque pairs fine architecture with sea views, and its dome is at its best at sunset and when lit at night. Entry is free. It is a working mosque, so dress modestly, women cover their hair, and prayer times are best avoided. A stroll along the Port Said corniche makes a natural pairing.
