Port Said's most famous and beautiful building, standing on the bank of the Suez Canal at its northern entrance, with three green domes and white facades of arched arcades, so from the water it looks like a floating palace. It was built in the late nineteenth century as the headquarters of the Universal Suez Canal Company. After the canal was nationalised in 1956 it became the headquarters of the Egyptian Suez Canal Authority, and it is still a working office building, so it is not open inside; its beauty lies in its outside view. The finest view is from the free ferry that crosses the canal between Port Said and Port Fuad, passing right in front of it, so you see it with giant ships transiting the canal in a single shot. It looks best at sunset and when lit at night. Viewing from outside is free, with photos from the canal-side promenade or the ferry. It is near the old lighthouse, so combine them on a waterfront walk.
