The Alimentarium is **the world's first museum devoted entirely to food**, opened by Nestlé in 1985 in its historic headquarters on Lake Geneva in Vevey. Its subject is not cooking alone but food as a complete human phenomenon: where it comes from, how it is grown, processed and preserved, what it does to the body, and how it has shaped cultures, religions and economies. The display is modern and interactive across three sections (food, society and the body) with screens and hands-on experiments — and it holds a **teaching kitchen** running cookery workshops for visitors and children (by booking), plus an outdoor food garden of seasonal herbs and vegetables. Directly in front of it in the lake stands **the giant fork**: an eight-metre steel fork planted in the water, installed in 1995 for the museum's tenth anniversary and taken down again a year later, brought back in 2007 by public affection and a petition and made permanent in 2008 — now Vevey's most photographed sight, and free to photograph from the quay.
