**Vevey** is cheaper, quieter and more authentic, with real everyday Swiss life and a popular market, just six minutes by train from Montreux — a smart choice for longer stays, families and sensible budgets. **Montreux** is grander, with more services and evening life, Chillon Castle within walking distance, and it is the hub for the festival and the scenic trains. For a short first visit: Montreux; for a longer stay: Vevey.

Vevey is an elegant town on Lake Geneva six minutes by train from Montreux, and many people prefer it: quieter, less touristy and more authentic, with a huge market square on the water (**the Grande Place**) hosting a popular market twice a week, a small old town, and a lakeside promenade of palms and gardens. Two great names are tied to it: **Charlie Chaplin**, who spent the last quarter-century of his life in a manor on the hill above (now the Chaplin's World museum) and has a statue on the quay; and **Nestlé**, founded here in 1867 and still headquartered in the town — from which come the Alimentarium food museum and its giant fork planted in the lake. It also has excellent small museums (camera, history, fine arts), a funicular up to the village of **Mont-Pèlerin** with its view, and the Lavaux vineyards beginning right at its edge. A quieter, cheaper base than Montreux with the same proximity to everything.
