The Almudena is Madrid's young cathedral — its story stranger than its age: Catholic Spain's capital lacked a cathedral for centuries (the see was Toledo's), and this one was finished only in 1993 after a century and a quarter of building — so its bright modern interior startles anyone expecting Gothic gloom: vividly painted ceilings and abstract contemporary windows within neo-classical lines. The name is our story: Almudena from the Arabic al-mudayna, the citadel — legend holds the Virgin's icon was hidden in the Islamic city wall and found at the reconquest, naming her Virgin of the Citadel. The whole site is Andalusi-rooted, facing the palace above the ruins of first Mayrit. The dome gallery (small museum ticket) overlooks palace and square — and the visit completes naturally with the Royal Palace opposite.

Almudena began in 1879, stumbled through wars and finances, and was consecrated by the Pope only in 1993 — a sixteenth-century capital with a 1990s cathedral.
No rival to Toledo or Seville and claims otherwise nothing — its value is site, story and modern strangeness, plus being half the palace visit in practice. Thirty interior minutes, fifteen for the dome — an excellent free addition, not a standalone goal.
