**An intensely white marble with large crystals โ exported in antiquity and still quarried today.** โ **The character**: Thasian marble is **brilliantly white** with **large crystal grains** giving it a distinctive **sugary sparkle** in the light โ different from Athenian **Pentelic** marble (which tends honey-coloured) and from the fine, translucent marble of **Paros**. โ **The history**: it was quarried on the island from the **7th century BC** **and exported across the Mediterranean** โ found in buildings and sculpture from Greece to Rome and Asia Minor; **and with the gold mines it was the source of the island's wealth**. โ **Today**: **the quarries are still working** โ **and you see large white scars** on the island's flanks, โ **a conspicuous visual mark** and a subject of environmental argument; the marble is exported and its dust used in other industries. โ **The practical note for a visitor**: **Thassos's white beaches** and pale sand **are that same marble** โ most famously **Marble Beach (Saliara)**, where the sand is marble grains; โ **and the water there looks turquoise for that reason**.

**An ancient city wrapped around a modern town, its theatre looking straight out to sea** โ in Limenas, the capital of Thassos. The **Parians** colonised the island in the 7th century BC, **and gold and silver mines** and quarries of **white marble** made it rich โ **Thasian marble was exported across the ancient world** and is still cut today. โ **What survives is spread around the modern town**: the wide **agora** right at its heart, the **city walls** with gates carved in relief (the gate of Silenus, the gate of Zeus), **temples**, and an **acropolis** above. โ **Its finest feature is the theatre**: an auditorium cut into the slope **with an open view of the sea** through the pines โ โ **and it hosts summer performances**. โ The climb to the acropolis and the theatre is **hard work**.
