**By a short car ferry โ which makes it the easiest of the Greek islands.** โ **The two routes**: **Keramoti โ Limenas** โ about **40 minutes**, **and the most frequent** (many crossings a day in season); and **Kavala โ Skala Prinos** โ about **an hour and a quarter**, useful if you are in Kavala itself. โ **Both carry cars** โ **so you arrive with your hire car or your own, with no domestic flight and no second rental**. โ **The nearest airport**: **Kavala (Chrysoupolis)**, about 15 km from Keramoti โ **very close by island standards**. โ **Booking**: **crossings are not normally booked for foot passengers**, โ **but at the August peak** the car queue is long โ **arrive an hour early**, or check whether advance booking is possible. โ **Sailings can be cancelled in strong wind** โ rare but possible. โ **Timing**: **June and September are best** โ warm water and fewer crowds; โ **July and August are very busy** with Balkan visitors arriving overland. โ **May and October** are lovely for walking and the villages, โ but the sea is colder and some facilities shut.

**The capital of Thassos and its main port, a town built inside an ancient city** โ on the north coast, facing Kavala. What marks it out is that **the ruins and the town interlock**: the ancient agora sits **right in the town centre**, the city walls run between the houses, **and the modern harbour uses the same ancient basin**. โ **It has two harbours**: the small round **old harbour** โ fishing boats with tavernas around it, and the prettier of the two โ and the larger **ferry port**. โ **Getting here is exceptionally easy**: a **ferry from Keramoti** (about 40 minutes) or from **Kavala** โ โ **and they carry cars**, so you arrive with your own vehicle without flying. โ **The town itself is ordinary** for the most part โ commercial and practical. โ But it is an excellent base for the island.
