Andriivskyi Descent is a historic cobbled street in Kyiv linking the old Upper Town with the commercial Podil district by the river. Guides call it the Montmartre of Kyiv, it is one of the city's best-known streets, and it is listed as a national landmark. The street runs about 720 metres, starting at the end of Volodymyrska Street and winding steeply down around Zamkova Hill to near Kontraktova Square. Along it stand historic landmarks, including the 18th-century baroque St Andrew's Church at the top, a turreted building known as the Castle of Richard the Lionheart, and old homes of writers and artists. You walk down cobbles between colourful houses with balconies and pointed roofs, past stalls selling paintings and handicrafts, cafés and small galleries. From the top you see the roofs of Podil and the Dnieper in the distance, with the church's green dome above you. St Andrew's Church is about 200 metres away in a straight line, and St Sophia's Cathedral about 800 metres. The cobbles are steep and slippery in rain, so wear comfortable shoes. The UK Foreign Office advises against all travel to Kyiv, and opening can change at short notice, so read the current advice before any planning.
