President Getúlio Vargas opened the Santos Municipal Aquarium on 2 July 1945 in the Ponta da Praia district, one of the first public aquariums in São Paulo state, and it receives about half a million visitors a year. It covers two thousand square metres with 32 freshwater and saltwater tanks holding more than two hundred species, among them pacu, catfish, turtles, penguins, moray eels, sharks and a sea lion. It was renovated and enlarged in the early 2000s, doubling its area, and the American artist Robert Wyland painted its outer walls in 2008. It opens Tuesday to Sunday 9:00-18:00, with the ticket office open until 17:30. Tickets are R$10, half price for children aged 8 to 12, students and teachers, and free up to age seven and from 65.
