The Fortaleza da Barra Grande guards the entrance channel to the port of Santos from the opposite shore, on Guarujá's side. Building began in 1584, during the union of the Spanish and Portuguese crowns, after the English corsair Edward Fenton attacked Santos in December 1583. Today it is a free museum, open Wednesday to Friday 9:00-17:00, Saturday 10:00-16:00, and Sunday and holidays 9:00-16:00. The easiest way there is by the small catraia boats from the Edgard Perdigão pier at Ponta da Praia in Santos, a 10-15 minute crossing.
