The São Paulo Aquarium in the Ipiranga district, south-east of the centre, opened on 6 July 2006 as the first themed aquarium in Latin America, with a single 3,000 m² sector of fish, reptiles and mammals from the Amazon, the Pantanal and the Tietê basin. It grew in stages, adding in 2008 the «Marine World» sector that takes visitors from fresh water to the sea. Today it covers 15,000 m² with four million litres of water holding thousands of animals of hundreds of species, and it supports conservation projects in the wild. It makes a good family visit on a rainy day. It opens daily 9:00-17:00. The full gate price is R$300, and buying online is far cheaper: about R$150 for adults, R$120 for children aged 2 to 12 and R$100 for seniors, free under 2, with a booked visit time.
