The Ubatuba Aquarium is a private institution opened in February 1996 to preserve and share marine biodiversity: 21 tanks hold about 430 animals of 110 species from fresh and salt water, with rooms that recreate ecosystems such as mangroves and coral reefs. One highlight is a nurse shark rescued from a private owner. Outside, the Praça da Baleia displays the restored skeleton of a humpback whale that stranded on Praia Grande in the early 2000s. Tickets cost R$70 (half price R$35 for ages 4-17, seniors and students), under-3s free; it opens daily from 10:00 until 20:00 or 22:00 depending on the season and day.
