A grand opera house in Astana, begun on 6 July 2010 and opened in 2013 with the Kazakh opera «Birzhan and Sara». Its style draws on ancient Greek architecture with white columns, blended with national elements such as frescoes of Charyn Canyon and Burabay. It has two halls: the Main Hall, with 1,250 seats for opera and ballet and a pit for up to 120 musicians, and the Chamber Hall, with 250 seats for chamber music. Its acoustics are counted among the best in the world. In the 13 m-high foyer hangs a crystal chandelier weighing 1.6 tonnes, and the Main Hall glows with tiers of gilded balconies and red curtains. The house has its own orchestra, ballet and opera company. Tickets are sold per performance at the box office or online, and the building can be seen from outside for free. Formal dress is appreciated at evening performances.
