ASTRA is ten times larger and richer in working mills and workshops; Bucharest's is denser and closer. Anyone passing through Sibiu should not miss ASTRA.

Europe's largest open-air museum: ASTRA spreads over 96 hectares of the Dumbrava forest around a lake — four hundred houses, mills and workshops moved from all of Romania and rebuilt in four sections: rural crafts, raw-material processing (forty water and wind mills that work!), food industries, and transport — with timber churches and a chapel, Delta boats, oil presses and paper mills. It walks along four kilometres of paths or rides by horse carriage or boat, and summer fills it with craft festivals, pottery fairs and shepherds' gatherings — Sundays are richest. The traditional restaurant by the lake serves country dishes. It lies 4 km from the centre by tram, bus 13 or taxi, and is what makes Sibiu the true capital of rural European culture: three hours at least, a whole day for the willing.
