Qingdao's loveliest quarter, a quiet seaside district of villas built mostly in the 1930s across about 66 hectares; its name means «Eight Great Passes» because its streets are named after famous military passes of the Great Wall and old Chinese fortresses. It holds more than 200 villas in architectural styles from over 20 countries, among them Russian, English, French, German, American, Japanese and Danish, earning it the nickname «exhibition of world architecture», and it has been a protected national monument since 2001. Each street has its own kind of tree: pink peach blossom fills Shaoguan Road in spring, crape myrtle Zhengyangguan Road in summer and golden and red autumn leaves Juyongguan Road; at its southern edge the Huashi Building, a five-storey mansion of 1932 nicknamed the «colourful stone building», stands on a rock above the sea. The quarter is free and always open, and the Huashi Building has a small entry fee of under CNY 10, per visitor guides. It is a favourite spot for Chinese wedding photos, and a walk here is loveliest in spring or autumn.
