A museum in the old Dutch bank building in the old town, with a grand classical facade and stained-glass windows, telling the story of money and economy in Indonesia, from the spice trade of the kingdoms through Dutch-era coinage and economic crises to the founding of the central bank. The display is modern and interactive, with screens and models; its best-known rooms are the gold room with bullion behind glass, the hall of rare coins from across the archipelago and the world, and the huge old iron vaults. The air-conditioned building is a relief from Jakarta's heat. Tickets are a token fee; it is usually closed on Mondays, and neat dress is requested. It is one of the old town's most enjoyable museums for families, pairing with the Jakarta History Museum and Fatahillah Square nearby. An hour is enough.
